By Controls Central / October 2023

In this article, we will delve into the comprehensive range of power meters offered by ACI (Automation Components, Inc.). We will explore each model's specifications, nomenclature, and key features.

While this article primarily focuses on product introduction and high-level specifications, we will touch upon the flexibility and various communication protocols that make ACI's power meters stand out in the market. So let's begin our journey through ACI's lineup of power meters.

ACI's Power Meter Series

ACI showcases three prominent power meter series: KW350, KW320, and KW1850. Each series is tailored to meet specific applications.

KW350 Series

The KW350 series is designed to pack in numerous features into just a few SKUs (stock-keeping units). This approach ensures efficiency and ease of selection for customers.

Models:
  • KW350
  • KW350-PC (Polycarbonate Panel Upgrade)
Key Features:
  • RS485 communication supporting Modbus and BACnet MSTP protocols.
  • User-friendly two-button interface.
  • Option for Rogowski coils or 333mV split-core CTs.

The KW350 is a versatile and popular choice among customers, providing 0.5s revenue-grade accuracy and a range of programmable outputs for alarms and energy calculation.

KW320 Series

The KW320 series is ideal for high-performance, high-accuracy power quality monitoring. It offers four different models to cater to various needs.

Models:

  • KW320-XX: Basic meter
  • KW320-PC: Includes a Polycarbonate Panel Upgrade
  • KW320Q-XX: Basic meter with Waveform Capture Feature
  • KW320Q-PC: Polycarbonate Panel Upgrade, coupled with Waveform Capture Feature
Key Features:
  • Power Quality Monitoring: The meters are designed to monitor harmonics up to the 63rd harmonic, qualifying them as true Power Quality (PQ) meters.
  • CT Flexibility: Users have the option to employ either Rogowski coils or 333mV split-core CTs, eliminating the need to specify the CT type during selection.
  • Waveform Capture: Exclusive to KW320Q models, this feature facilitates the capture and analysis of power quality events.
Communication and Functionalities:
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: The KW 320 model allows users to remotely configure multiple meters with ease through Wi-Fi.
  • Diverse Communication Protocols: This model supports a variety of protocols such as Ethernet, RS485, BACnet MS/TP, and Modbus RTU.
  • User-Friendly Keypad Interface: Ensures hassle-free on-site adjustments.
  • Top-Notch Accuracy: It boasts a 0.1% revenue-grade accuracy, perfect for essential energy measurements.
  • Data Logging: With 8GB of built-in data storage, local energy data logging is a breeze.
  • Enhanced CT Input: The inclusion of a fourth CT input in the KW 320 aids in measuring residual current through the neutral leg.

KW320B Power Meter Features:

Tailored to match specific cost and communication prerequisites, the KW320B shines with:

  1. Exclusive BACnet IP Communication: Sporting just a single Ethernet port, it operates solely on BACnet IP.
  2. Web Interface: Allows configuration either via its web interface or the display.
  3. Streamlined Features: Unlike the KW 320, this model doesn't offer onboard data logging or Wi-Fi capabilities.

KW1850 Multi-Circuit Meter

The KW1850 is a versatile multi-circuit meter designed to efficiently handle up to six three-phase circuits. It's tailored to deliver comprehensive energy data and power quality monitoring, making it an optimal choice for various applications, especially where individual circuit monitoring is vital.

Key features include:

  • Digital Inputs and Outputs: With 18 digital inputs, six digital outputs, and two alarm relays, the KW1850 allows for pulse counting from external meters.
  • Stackable CT Inputs: A unique design feature enables the CT inputs to stack on top of each other, optimizing space and promoting efficient design.
  • Mounting Flexibility: Whether you're looking to mount it on DIN rails or house it in a NEMA 4X enclosure, the KW1850 provides easy installation options.

Panel Upgrades

ACI provides panel upgrade options for KW350, KW320, and KW1850 series meters. These upgrades come with pre-labeled CT terminals, fused terminal blocks, and pre-wiring, simplifying installation and reducing the chances of wiring issues. Panel upgrades can be an excellent time-saving solution, especially for retrofit applications.

Current Transformers (CTs) Selection for ACI's Meters

Selecting the right Current Transformers (CTs) for your power metering project is crucial. Here's a quick guide to streamline your choice with ACI's offerings:

  1. Output & Conductor Size: Ensure CT's output aligns with your power meter and fits your conductor.
  2. Amperage Range: Opt for CTs covering the entire current range of your circuits.
  3. Accuracy: Standard CTs suffice for most tasks, but decide between monitoring or revenue grade based on project needs.
  4. Form Factor: Choose between split-core (opening) or solid-core (non-opening) based on installation ease.
  5. Special Cases: For higher amperage (above 600A) or large conductors, consider Rogowski Coils or parallel CTs.
  6. Guidance: When in doubt, consult your power meter manufacturer.

ACI’s primary CTs:

  • Rogowski Coils: Ideal for multiple circuits or currents below 400A.
  • 333mV Split-Core CTs: Best for single circuit monitoring with higher accuracy.

Selecting the Right Meter

To choose the most suitable meter for a specific project, consider the following key questions:

  • What communication protocol is required (e.g., BACnet IP, Modbus RTU)?
  • Is local data logging necessary for the application?
  • Which data points are essential for measurement accuracy?
  • What are the accuracy requirements for the project?

ACI offers a product selection guide in the ACI product catalog to aid in choosing the right meter based on specific project needs.

In Conclusion

ACI's power meters, including the KW320, KW320B, KW350, and KW1850 series, provide reliable and accurate energy measurement solutions for various applications. With flexible communication options and additional features like data logging and digital inputs, these meters cater to diverse energy monitoring requirements.
