The Crucial Need for a Gas Detection System in a Boiler Room

HVAC systems rely on mechanical systems such as utility plants, boilers, and chillers to function effectively. To ensure safety, numerous states have implemented regulations mandating gas detection and monitoring to alert individuals of potential leaks and harmful exhaust fumes.

Being in close proximity to a boiler poses a risk of exposure to dangerous gases. It is crucial to have adequate ventilation in place to minimize hazardous scenarios. Installing gas detection systems becomes necessary to promptly detect any issues arising from damaged or malfunctioning exhaust vents or supply lines. Carbon monoxide, a combustion byproduct, can leak into occupied spaces if not properly exhausted. It is colorless and odorless, making detection challenging and leaving individuals vulnerable.


Methane and propane are commonly used as fuels for boilers and heating systems. However, if there is any damage to the supply lines, valves, or storage tanks, leaks can occur, posing a risk of explosions. Without proper monitoring, the presence of methane and propane can lead to hazardous conditions.


Numerous refrigerants are used in modern cooling systems. Some, specifically, Freons, are highly toxic. Others such as ammonia and carbon dioxide can be toxic at high levels causing mild or moderate poisoning, headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

Mechanical rooms can be overlooked when considering potentially unsafe spaces in buildings. Fuel and exhaust leaks can be costly, hazardous, or fatal if not controlled. According to the CDC, Carbon monoxide poisoning is a leading cause of accidental death, with over 400 fatalities and 4000 hospitalizations in the US annually.




The Q5 Series is a microprocessor-based “smart” gas transmitter with user-friendly features. It supports electrochemical or catalytic bead sensors for toxic or combustible gases respectively. Users can easily install pre-calibrated sensors, reducing calibration costs and downtime. Display options include relay status, time, TWA, STEL, concentration, or none. Programming and calibration are nonproprietary, protected by a user-selectable password.

The M-Controller is a multi-channel controller and alarm unit. It utilizes both digital and analog communications to interface with a maximum of 32 remote digital transmitters/sensors, and 8 analog transmitters/sensors. Range and alarm setpoints are set either through the front keypad or through software that is downloaded to the controller from a PC. An additional feature includes 24 VDC transistor outputs for a horn and strobe.

Horn and Strobe Multifunctional LED beacon with multiple inputs and three separate levels of alarm (alert, pre-alarm, alarm) controllable via independent electric contacts. Channel one includes a simulated strobe (triple flash) visual signal only. Channel two adds an audible tone, selectable from 32 tones via dip switch, to the simulated strobe effect. Channel three includes a steady light and a second, unique tone selectable from 32 different tones, for a total of 64 unique tones.
